City Council Approves West Campus Land Use Plan

“This project will change the face of Calgary forever (Don’t screw it up!)” -- Mayor Nenshi

Mayor Naheed Nenshi captured the magnitude of the West Campus vision and offered the Trust some sage advice after City Council officially approved our land use application on September 8.

The council meeting included a public hearing followed by a series of questions from Councillors. The resulting unanimous decision marks one of the biggest milestones in the project’s history to-date.

Land use approval kicks off the next phase of the plan to develop the 180 acres of underutilized land just west of University of Calgary main campus. Based on a model successfully enacted at both UBC and SFU, the vision imagines a complete and vibrant urban community that is home to residents of all ages and life stages.  All profits from development go back to support University initiatives.

Anticipated amenities include a grocery store, cinema and central park with programmable space for farmers’ markets, pop-up eateries, performances, and sports activities.

Going forward, our stakeholders will remain an important part of the process as we strive to create a community that we can all be proud of and enjoy.

The future of the West Campus community begins now.
